The mango wood industry is an important source of income for many Thai people, and a good example of using a sustainable resource wisely.
Mango trees are cut down when they no longer produce enough fruit in a given season, and are replaced with new trees. This cycle has been going on for many years, so there are always the same amount of productive trees in an orchard.
The same applies to rubber, tamarind and nut trees. Most nut trees have very good timber for wood turning and is prized for this reason.
The trees which are harvested for their timber provide cash for the farmer, which is usually reinvested in the farm.
The trees are cut into usable size logs and sold to the many factories in the Chiang Mai district.
Chiang Mai is famous for it's mango wood products, as well as monkey wood, teak wood, rubber wood, rose wood, coconut and sugar palm wood.
These timbers are used to make a wide variety of handicrafts and home decor items such as vases, bowls, kitchen utensils, candle holders, furniture and fashion accessories.
Mango wood is mainly used to create beautiful vases, bowls, trays and candle holders and is becoming popular with furniture makers.
All mango wood products, whether they are vases, bowls or candle holders are first "roughed" into shape while the timber is still "green", ie. before it is kiln dried.
This is because the timber is easier to carve before it is dried, still in a soft state. After it is shaped it is then kiln dried in ovens which are usually gas fired, or in conventional wood fired kilns.
Depending on the size of the piece of timber it is dried for up to a month. After the drying process it is then ready to be carved and sanded into it's finished shape.
Finally, the artwork and any additional carving is applied and the piece is ready to be finished with either clear lacquer or bees' wax.
