Hand carved soap flowers are one of the most beautiful forms of handicraft Thailand has to offer.
They are so delicate and life like and are often mistaken for real flowers. There are an infinite number of colors, styles and designs because each soap flower carver adds his or her own touch to their creations.
Soap flowers are carved from a certain type of soap, specially chosen because it is ideal for the carving of such delicate objects. After the carving process is completed the flowers are hand painted by spaying with a blend of food coloring and a thinning agent. Finally the painted flowers are glued into mango wood lacquerware bowls with hand painted lids. They also come in coconut wood, glass and plastic containers.
Like real flowers, they have a pleasant fragrance, because of the soap used for carving. A drop of perfume or aromatic oil enhances this aroma.
They come in a wide range of sizes : 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", 7" and 8".
The sizes are the diameter of the container or bowl, whether it is mango wood, glass or plastic.
Two inch and three inch bowls usually hold only one flower, four inch and five inch hold three flowers, and six inch, seven inch and eight inch hold anything up to seven small flowers.
Soap flowers make the perfect gift, whether it is a birthday, Christmas, Mothers Day or a wedding guest give-away.
Soap flower carving is an important source of income in northern Thailand and by promoting this wonderful craft we feel we are contributing to the Thai economy.
